Blues boss Paul Jewell goes into Saturday’s home game against Reading looking to arrest an alarming run of four successive defeats which has seen his side drop to 16th in the Championship. The Town manager has midfielder Keith Andrews and striker Daryl Murphy available again after injury, but defenders Ibrahima Sonko and Damien Delaney again miss out.

Academy pair Jide Maduako and Jack Marriott (pictured) were on target for the second time in three days and second-year pro Ronan Murray was also on the scoresheet as a Town reserves side beat Tottenham 3-1 in a friendly at their Spurs Lodge training ground this afternoon. Maduako and Marriott both netted as the U18s beat Portsmouth on Saturday.

Tamás Priskin netted a second half penalty but it wasn’t enough to stop a strong Town reserves side from losing 2-1 to Arsenal in a friendly at Playford Road. After an almost chance free first half, Ignasi Miquel and Ozan Ozyakup put the Gunners, who included former Blue Fabian Wilnis’s nephew Kyle Ebecilio as a sub, two goals in front after the break.

Keith Andrews’s fifth goal for the Blues saw Paul Jewell’s men to a fortunate 1-0 home victory over Portsmouth. Town were a pale shadow of their usual selves for much of the game and Pompey missed a number of good chances before the Irishman netted the winner from close range in the 69th minute.

Town crashed out of the Carling Cup at the first round stage as League Two Northampton deservedly came from behind to win 2-1 at Portman Road. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas put the Blues ahead with a first half cross-shot but goals from Ben Tozer and Paul Turnbull either side of half-time sealed the Cobblers’ place in round two.

Town boss Paul Jewell will ring the changes tonight when his side take on Northampton in the first round of the Carling Cup at Portman Road (KO 7.45pm). The Blues boss has confirmed that Arran Lee-Barrett will start in goal, while Tommy Smith will return to the defence, Nathan Ellington is likely to make his first start for Town up front and 15-year-old Byron Lawrence is set to be amongst the subs.

Town’s pre-season friendly at Colchester United was abandoned with eight minutes to go at 0-0 after U’s midfielder Andy Bond suffered a facial injury in a collision with his keeper Mark Cousins. Bond required lengthy treatment with the injury considered so severe that an ambulance was brought to the edge of the pitch causing the abandonment, with Bond eventually helped across to it with blood streaming down his face.
